An internationally-renowned sculptor, Lea Vivot, is seeking the opinions and comments of the residents of Weyburn about two different proposed designs she has done for a sculpture of Tommy Douglas. The sculptor will be donating the final product to the City of Weyburn as a gift, but before she sets out to do the final form, she has done up two clay figures or maquettes of what the sculpture could look like. "These are only rough concepts at this time, and will have to be refined. It will be life-sized when she's finished," said Ross McMurtry, one of the ad hoc committee members who have been in communication with Vivot about the sculpture idea. The committee has been collecting donations towards the city's cost to set up the statue, but McMurtry said they are not seeking funds at this time, just views and comments on the proposed sculptures. Two different poses are presented, and the artist wants to know which one is preferred by the public, including any suggestions people may have about them, as long as they realize the figures they are looking at do not have any fine details on them as to what Douglas looks like. Considering the figures, people should consider, "Is this the Tommy they knew? Any comments would be appreciated," said McMurtry. Douglas was named in a national vote as "The Greatest Canadian", and Vivot wanted to pay homage to Douglas for what he has contributed to Canada through his life. Opinions and comments about the sculptures may be made to ad hoc committee members Ross McMurtry, Isabelle Butters or Gerald Alexander, and those comments will in turn be forwarded to Vivot. |
