Since 1984, a number of significant happenings have occurred with respect to the Yellow Grass volunteer fire department. In that year, a new fire truck was purchased, which also mean new fire-fighting equipment. Some of the equipment included six self-contained breathing apparatus, bunker suits to equip 15 fire fighters, four man-down alarms, several new fire nozzles, a foam injector, a portable fire pump for use as a backup to the truck, a new radio, and a 911 system. The radio system operates on a common frequency with other surrounding fire departments, which enables the Yellow Grass department to communicate with these other departments in cases where mutual assistance is required. In 1998, the town sold its old red fire truck and purchase a used emergency response van. The van can be used to transport fire fighters, and carries emergency response equipment. The Yellow Grass fire department also has two active EMS First Responders, Mickey Quigley and Bob Grassick. In 2004, a new fire siren was purchased and installed by the Town of Yellow Grass. The department has also entered into a mutual aid agreement with the surrounding fire departments so assistance can be received or given as the need arises. Also the fire department is a member of the Soo Line Emergency Measures Organization, which includes the Town of Yellow Grass, the Village of Lang, the RM of Scott and RM of Brokenshell. Over the past few years, the fire department has had numerous small fires as well as some major fires that they had to respond to. In 1984 the new UGG elevator which was under construction burned down, taking an existing elevator with it. In 1994, the Yellow Grass Hotel burned down, and on Oct. 31, 1999, a major prairie fire occurred in the Brokenshell Community Pasture. The fire departments from Weyburn, Radville, Lang, Pangman, Milestone and Yellow Grass responded, and municipal equipment from surrounding RMs and individual farmers and companies were also called in to help bring the fire under control. In November of 2002, a house fire occurred which resulted in the loss of two lives. It is believed these were the first-ever deaths due to fire to occur in Yellow Grass. In addition, the fire department has also responded to several motor vehicle accidents on Highway 39 to provide fire backup, traffic control, and medical attention by First Responders who also assist in extrication operations. On Dec. 7, 2004, Chief Gord Rutten and Deputy Chief Bob Grassick were presented with the Provincial Protective Services Medal in recognition of at least 25 years with the volunteer fire department. Senior members Norm Wall, Jim Robertson and Brian Wood have over 20 years. Since 1984, the fire department has seen an increase in the number of fire fighters as well as a decrease in their average age. The present members are Chief Gordon Rutten, Deputy Chief Bob Grassick (also a First Responder), George Moore, Dale Dixon, Barry Murray, Ryley Richards, Allen Altwasser, Dean Altwasser, Rod Richards, Mickey Quigley (also First Responder), Garnet Long, Sandi Grassick, Justin Carver, Sam Erb, Michael Robertson, Jason Johnstone and Chuck Shugart (RM of Scott). Also, the Yellow Grass First Responders include Trich Klemenz, Faye Altwasser, Danna Grassick, Lindsay Watson and Sharon Teske. |
