Jared Smale traded to Port Hope

Red Wings win one out of three games on road trip

The Weyburn Red Wings had a difficult time on the road this past weekend, taking one of three games.

On Friday, the Red Wings were in Kindersley to take on the Klippers and lost 3-1. Kindersley held a 3-0 lead until Josh Bray scored for Weyburn with assists from Craig Cornelson and Stephen Simms on the power play at 16:43 in the third period.

Kyle McConnell took the loss in goal facing 28 shots, as the Red Wings outshot the Klippers with 30 shots on the Kindersley goal.

"In Kindersley, it was a tough road game. We hit the goal post a few times and, in the tight checking game like that, you aren't going to get many opportunities," said head coach Dwight McMillan.

The Red Wings headed to Battleford on Saturday to face the North Stars and came away with a 5-2 win. Brayden Nargang opened the scoring at 4:48 of the first period with an assist from Bray in the first period, but Battleford found the equalizer early in the second frame.

Weyburn regained the lead with 28 seconds left in the second period with a goal by Rhett Bly with assists from Eric Calibaba and Jared Whincup on the power play. The Red Wings then took a two-goal lead 47 seconds into the third period with a goal from Torrey Lindsay, assisted by Preston Shupe and Simms, on the power play.

The North Stars came within one goal, but Bray, assisted by Luke Johnson and Nargang, and Shupe, with assists from Kyle Haines and Cornelson, rounded out the scoring in the third.

A.J. Whiffen picked up the win in goal for the Red Wings, facing 40 shots, while the offence was able to put 41 shots on the Battleford goal.

"We played excellent and, instead of hitting the goal post, we put the puck in the net when we had opportunities," McMillan said.

The Red Wings finished their three-game road trip with a 4-2 loss to the Humboldt Broncos. Humboldt held a 2-0 lead in the second period when Lindsay scored at 14:29 with assists from Simms and Nick Needham on the power play.

Simms tied up the game 2-2 at 16:27 of the third period, assisted by Haines and Shupe, on the power play, but the Broncos added one goal at 18:37 and an empty net goal at 19:34.

"For the third game in a row we were tied 2-2. I made a blunder which allowed the Broncos to get back into the game," said McMillan.

On Oct. 2 at the Colosseum, the Red Wings gave up five goals in the third period as the Notre Dame Hounds came from behind to defeat Weyburn 6-4.

Calibaba opened the scoring in the first period, with assists from Scott Doody and Cornelson, to give Weyburn the early lead. The Red Wings then took a 3-0 lead with goals from Joel Langevin, assisted by Cornelson and Needham, and Bray, with Shupe and Haines picking up assists, in the second period.

The Hounds' Tanner Vandesype scored at 18:05 of the second period to pull within two goals of the Red Wings. By the 9:39 mark of the third period, the Hounds had the scored tied, but Bray, with assists from Calibaba and Langevin, scored at 10:45 to take the lead back.

Notre Dame then scored three answered goals including an empty-net goal at 19:11 to put away the Wings.

McConnell was between the pipes for the Red Wings and faced 44 shots, while the Red Wings offence had 34 shots on goal.

On Thursday, the Red Wings announced that they have finally dealt forward Jared Smale, along with forward Alex Horsburgh, to the Port Hope Predators of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League, in exchange for 20-year-old forward Lucas Faganely and future considerations.

Smale had three assists in two games with the Red Wings before being put on the trading block due to disciplinary actions. Horsburgh had two penalty minutes on no points in three games with the Red Wings. They will be joining former Red Wings teammate Sean Bassingthwaite in Port Hope.

"It worked out good," said McMillan. "We had a boy (Smale) who didn't follow the team rules and that is a person we don't want on our team. We will miss his scoring, but we will not miss his character."

Faganely has not arrived in Weyburn and is still undecided whether he will report to the Red Wings.

For the period ending Sept. 28, the Canadian Junior "A" Hockey League announced their national rankings with the Weyburn Red Wings picking up an honourable mention.

Accolades also came to Simms as he was named the SJHL defenceman of the week this past week.

The Red Wings will now return home to face the Estevan Bruins Friday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Colosseum before returning the favour on Saturday, Oct. 13, in Estevan.
