For the first time since they joined the Regina Intercollegiate Football League, the Weyburn Comprehensive Eagles have gone through the regular season undefeated. "It's very special," said coach Darren Abel. "The Eagles program has been around a long time and has seen a lot of success. When Darold Kot was the coach, there were some great teams at this school." "It was awesome," said quarterback Brock Struthers. "I heard that no other team had gone unbeaten after the O'Neill game and I wanted to be a part of something no one else has ever done before." Although many of the players were excited about the record, a few had mixed emotions. As an unbeaten team, the Eagles know that they are going to be a target for the rest of the league in the playoffs. "It's good but, in a way, not the best thing," said Grade 12 player Jon Neuberger. "We are now seen as a big threat by the other teams." Neuberger added that he hopes the team can thrive off that energy during the playoffs. According to another Grade 12 player, Colten Jensen, the record was nice and he feels that this team compares well to last year's league championship team which only lost one league game. "I don't think they are very different," Jensen said. "We are a close-knit team. We are all friends and a nice big group." On Saturday, the Eagles put a wrap to their season by defeating Luther 41-7 to put their names into the record books. Following the game, the Eagles were presented the Father Frank O'Brien trophy for placing first in the Regina Intercollegiate Football League with a record of 7-0. "I know the kids were very pumped and it was quite emotional for the Grade 12 players," said Abel. "It was sad to be sitting on the sidelines for the second half, but we were able to play the final drive," said Grade 12 player Colten Jensen. Just having the opportunity to lift the first-place trophy at Darold Kot Field in front of the hometown fans was a very special moment for a lot of the players. "It was a lot better than last year when we received the trophy in Regina," Neuberger said. "There was a really good turnout to watch us make history." Struthers led the team in passing, going five for eight for 105 yards and one touchdown. Dustin Chartrand was one for two through the air for 21 yards and one touchdown. On the receiving end of those passes were Jensen with two catches for 51 yards and one touchdown and Neuberger with two catches for 39 yards. Baron Anderson had one catch which went in for a 21-yard touchdown and Justin Pitre had one catch for 15 yards. Kyle York led the way on the ground with seven carries for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Reid Paterson had nine carries for 39 yards and Derek Geisler ran six times for 39 yards and one touchdown. Struthers rushed once for a 22-yard touchdown and Chartrand had one carry for 10 yards. Jon Neuberger ran once for five yards. The offence picked up a total of seven first downs, racking up 182 rushing yards and 126 passing yards for 308 yards of total offence. "Our offence really shone," said Neuberger. "We scored on most of our drives and I don't think we turned over the ball except on downs." The defence held strong, allowing Luther 12 first downs and 209 yards of total offence, including 127 yards through the air and 82 yards along the ground. Weyburn's defence also had one interception in the game. "I thought we played well," said Abel. "It was nice to see the second stringers play in the second half and have them get some success." On Thursday, Oct. 18, Notre Dame and Martin will play each other in Regina, with the winner to face Weyburn in the league finals. "We should be playing either Notre Dame or Martin. We beat both of them, Notre Dame 16-0 and Martin 25-6, earlier in the season, but we didn't totally dominate," Abel said. |
