Weyburn Ag Society seeks input for new history book

The Weyburn Agricultural Society will be celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2008, and are compiling a history book in conjunction with the anniversary to cover the activities and people of the Ag Society since 1908.

The committee, headed by Muriel Wahl, is asking that anyone who has any information or photos that could be used in the history book to forward it to the committee.

The organizers are interested in the full gamut of what the Ag Society has been involved with over the past 100 years, including 4-H beef shows and sales; light horse shows; rodeos; Farm Updates; Rural-Urban events; parades; Fairs; building losses and construction; the old and new grandstand; tractor pulls; heavy horse pulls; Farm Boys and Girls camps; 4-H Queen contest; grain shows; grandstand shows; attractions, horse racing, midways, exhibits, sheep, pig and poultry.

"We'd like to have personal memoirs, such as if someone had a specific fair they remember, plus any photos. We might have to pick and choose photos, but people may have photos of buildings that are gone, such as the octagon building, or of the old grandstand," said Wahl.

The committee isn't putting a deadline on yet for submissions, as they want to include the 2008 anniversary celebrations, but the information that has already been received is now being compiled and organized by various volunteers on the committee as it comes in, said Wahl.

When people submit their personal memories of events or activities they remember or were involved in, Wahl said it's important to include such details as the dates, names of people you were involved with, and location, such as in an old horse barn, or by the old grandstand, or wherever the event was centred.

Submissions may be mailed in to the Ag Society, to Box 699, Weyburn, S4H 2K8, or can be e-mailed to agsociety@accesscomm.ca, or dropped off at the Ag Society's office. The office is open at reduced hours, from Monday to Wednesday, so people are advised to phone the office first to see if it's open.
