The Weyburn Agricultural Society is finalizing some of their plans to celebrate their Centennial in 2008, with two main events set for marking this milestone. The first event the society is planning for is a Centennial banquet on Feb. 11 at McKenna Hall, said Ray Wahl of the Ag Society's Centennial committee. The banquet will mainly be held as an event to honor past presidents and secretaries of the society's board over the past 100 years. Plans are to have memorabilia, along with some local entertainment and a skit, with tickets to be available early in the New Year. The second main event for the celebration will the Weyburn Fair, which has been set to take place from Monday, June 30 to Wednesday, July 2, with the parade to take place on the Monday. "We're planning to have a special float and clowns, and bands. We have four confirmed so far," said Wahl, noting the bands will come from the Comp, St. Michael, Weyburn Junior High and Moose Jaw, with a fifth band also interested. Some of the special events at the Fair includes plans to have the Governor General of Canada attend for the official opening ceremonies on Monday evening, and the Tuesday will be in honour of the 4-H clubs in the area. A special fireworks show to close out the day (which is also Canada Day) are planned, and the final day of the fair will be dedicated to the pioneers. The Country Women's Association will put on a social, and a threshing bee will be held in the southwest corner of the fair grounds. Wahl said they are hoping to have a machinery row set up, showing the evolution of farm equipment from the earliest days to today, and special entertainment. |
