Vandals do damage at Animal Park

The organizer of the Therapeutic Animal Park near Tatagwa View had to deal with the aftermath of vandalism over the weekend, and is now considering possibly installing video surveillance cameras.

Sometime overnight Friday, some culprits tried to rip down the fence enclosing a calf, broke open a pair of gates and made off with the three ducks in an adjoining enclosure, killing at least one of them.

The calf got out of its enclosure, and was found wandering around inside the larger fenced-in area, said Don Sealy. As for the ducks, one was found dead out behind the animal park, but there is no sign of the other two ducks at all.

According to Sealy, the culprits were scared off by someone from the Tatagwa View long-term care facility across the road. If they hadn't been, the damages to the animal park may have ended up more extensive.

As it is, Sealy said he will have to find the money to do the repairs to the fence, with the calf's fence most extensively damaged. Some of the animals were sent to their winter farm homes already due to the incident, including the calf, the goat, the pig and llama.

The park subsists mainly on donations from businesses and the public, and to keep the park facility safe, Sealy noted he may have to put in surveillance cameras, which will cost a fair amount of money.
