Erickson impresses in debut

Red Wings get lop-sided victories against Yorkton

Weyburn native Tanner Erickson got his first start as a goaltender for the Weyburn Red Wings on Friday night at the Colosseum against the Yorkton Terriers and picked up a 7-2 victory.

"It was a blast. I was a bit nervous when I started, but as I got into the game I was fine," Erickson said.

Erickson stopped 28 of 30 shots in the victory and the Red Wings outshot the Terriers 32-30.

"He did well," said head coach Dwight McMillan. "He really didn't have an opportunity on the goals that he let in."

Kyle Haines also had a big game as he picked up four points, one goal and three assists. For his efforts, Haines was named the SJHL Defenceman of the Week.

"I was happy to get the four points, but I was a lot happier that we were able to pick up the two points as a team," Haines said.

Weyburn jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the first period. Rhett Bly opened the scoring at 9:06 shorthanded with assists from Nick Needham and Connor Krukowski. Kyle Haines scored at 11:15 on the power play with assists from Brayden Nargang and Luke Johnson to extend the lead.

Yorkton's starting goaltender Lynden Sammartino was pulled after only 8:45 into the first period and replaced by backup Joel Danyluk.

The Terriers tied up the game with two quick goals in the second period, but Torrey Lindsay scored Weyburn's second shorthanded goal of the game with an assist from Preston Shupe at 6:27.

The Red Wings then scored four unanswered goals in the third period to cruise to victory. Michael Seib made the score 4-2 at 3:33 on the power play with assists from Haines and Shupe.

Shupe scored another power play goal at 6:31, assisted by Stephen Simms and Haines. Josh Bray scored unassisted at 13:45 and Nick Needham found the back of the net at 18:38 with assists from Haines and Simms to round out the scoring.

"We played very good defensively and in the third period the boys found a way to put them away and got four goals. Yorkton is a big, strong team and you can't let them play in your own end," McMillan said.

Weyburn finished the home-and-home series with Yorkton on Saturday night in Yorkton. Luke Johnson had one goal and two assists for three points in a 7-4 win for the Wings.

Yorkton hit the scoreboard first but Weyburn replied with two goals. With a two-man advantage, Shupe bulged the twine with assists from Lindsay and Seib. About one minute later the Wings got another power play goal from Nargang, assisted by Joel Langevin and Johnson. The Terriers evened the score late in the first period.

The Red Wings took their first lead of the game at 1:32 of the second period with a goal by Lindsay, assisted by Shupe and Craig Cornelson. The Terriers scored twice to bring the score to 4-3 at the end of the second period.

For the second night in a row, the Red Wings came out firing in the third period. Johnson scored at 1:21 with assists from Bray and Seib and Nargang found the back of the net 13 seconds later, assisted by Johnson and Bray.

Scott Doody got a goal at 9:17, assisted by Eric Calibaba and Haines. Nick Needham put the game away at 19:55 with an empty net goal with assists credited to Doody and Simms.

"We talked between the second and third period and we knew that a couple of shots could turn into goals," said Haines. "We got a couple of quick goal in the third and didn't look back."

La Ronge Ice Wolves goaltender Jonathan Jobin stole the show on Wednesday at the Colosseum as they defeated the Red Wings 1-0. The Red Wings outshot La Ronge 43-28, yet Jobin picked up the shutout.

The first period ended scoreless, but La Ronge scored the only goal of the game past the game's second star, Wings goalie A.J. Whiffen, at 16:14 of the second period. Even with an extra attacker with 11 seconds left in the game, the Red Wings couldn't find the equalizer.

"The majority of our shots came from outside of the parameter and we couldn't jump on the rebounds fast enough," Haines said.

Also on Wednesday night, a record held by former Red Wing goaltender Terry Denike and five other past SJHL goaltenders fell. Sammartino of the Yorkton Terriers picked up his ninth career shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Kindersley Klippers to pass the old record of eight shutouts.

At Friday night's game, the Red Wings took donations for the Weyburn and District United Way Communithon. With donations of $20, donors received an official donation receipt and two tickets for any regular season game.

The roster for Team Canada West for the World Junior "A" Hockey Challenge was released on Wednesday. Although no Red Wings were chosen, head coach Dwight McMillan will take an assistant coaching role once again this year.

The 2007 World Junior "A" Challenge will take place from Monday, Nov. 5, to Sunday, Nov. 11, at Trail and Nelson, B.C.

The next action for the Red Wings will be Friday, Oct. 26, against the Flin Flon Bombers at 7:30 p.m. at the Colosseum. Saturday, Oct. 27, will be a neutral site game in Radville against the Notre Dame Hounds at 3 p.m. The Red Wings will wrap up their series with Notre Dame on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. at the Colosseum.
