For the second year in a row the Weyburn Comp Eagles are 3A Stewart Conference Regina Intercollegiate Football League champions after defeating the O'Neill Titans 22-21 on Monday in Regina. With only seconds left on the clock and the Eagles up by one, O'Neill attempted a game-winning field goal that went wide and Jon Neuberger returned out of the end zone. "It was a very exciting moment (winning the championship)," said Abel. "It was the perfect way to cap off our undefeated season with the city championship. The way we won was very rewarding." Brock Struthers was at the controls at quarterback, completing seven of 11 passes for 176 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His top receiver was Colton Jensen with five catches for 162 yards and touchdowns of 99 yards and 25 yards. Neuberger had two catches had 19 yards. Kyle York was the leading rusher with five carries for 55 yards. Struthers took off with the ball 10 times for 54 yards and Chandler Dionne had five carries for 12 yards. Derek Geisler rushed the ball twice for 10 yards and Neuberger ran three times for one yard. Weyburn's offence tallied 12 first downs with 132 yards on the ground and 176 yards through the air for 308 total yards of offence. The Eagles had to punt four times for an average of 27.3 yards. The defence held O'Neill to 15 first downs, including 211 yards passing and 100 yards receiving for 311 yards of total offence. "We showed a lot of character and heart," said head coach Darren Abel. "We were down 14-0 at the start and we fought back." The Eagles will now face the winner of the Saskatoon Graham-Prince Albert Carlton game in the provincial semifinal on Saturday, Nov. 3. The winner of that series will play in Moose Jaw for the provincial title on Saturday, Nov. 10. "Until we find out who we are playing and what they bring, we don't know what to expect. As for us, we have to still work out a few errors. We had some turnovers that hurt us," said Abel. Despite giving up seven turnovers on Oct. 22 in Regina, the Eagles defeated the Notre Dames Hounds 22-16 to clinch their spot in the 3A Stewart Conference final. "We barely survived. We picked the wrong time to play one of our worst games of the season," said Abel. The Eagles turned the ball over seven times during the game, but the defence made up for it, forcing Notre Dame to commit five turnovers. Neuberger had three interceptions and York made a last-minute interception to save the game. "(We got) one more turnover and we were okay," said Geisler. "We had an okay third quarter and that kept us in the game." Both Abel and slotback/defensive lineman Jensen felt it could have been a case of being nervous, as a lot of the newer players have never played a playoff game of that calibre. "We didn't play our best but we got a win," Jensen said. "A lot of guys were playing their first game of this kind." The offence mustered up 13 first downs with 225 yards rushing, 108 yards passing for 333 yards of total offence. Struthers went six for 15 passing for 108 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Leading in receiving was Neuberger with five catches for 104 yards. Justin Pitre had two catches for seven yards and a touchdown. York was the leading rusher was 22 carried for 161 yards and two touchdowns. Struthers called his own number four times for 37 yards and Geisler ran twice for 10 yards. Dionne carried the ball three times for nine yards and Jensen ran twice for eight yards. |
