In a close game with Notre Dame, the Penta Gold Wings fell to the Hounds in a 4-3 loss on Wednesday evening. "We just about pulled it off," said head coach Len Williams. "We saw strong play from several girls, including Rianne Wight, Amy Kelbaugh, Paige Bertwistle and goaltender Jenna Closson." Wight, who is captain, was a dominant force to be reckoned with for the Gold Wings. She scored the first two goals for the Gold Wings and assisted on the third goal. In the second period, Wight led the offence after tying an early Hound lead off an assist by Marla Ives, however the Hounds were able to score a second goal regaining their one-goal lead. Notre Dame took two more goals in the third period to secure the lead, with the Gold Wings responding with a stronger offence to get more goals of their own. Wight secured the second goal off assists by Paige Wheeler and Erica Williams, then the third goal was scored by Amy Kelbaugh, with an assist by Wight and Stefany Rankin. Despite coming back to tighten the score, and taking a time out to rally the troops in the last seconds of the game, the Gold Wings were unable to secure a tying goal, with Notre Dame taking the win. The Penta Gold Wings will be featured in two exhibition games against Brandon on Friday, Nov. 9 and Saturday, Nov. 10. Then regular season play resumes for the girls on Wednesday, Nov. 14, when they face off against Melville at the Weyburn Colosseum at 8 p.m. |
