Weyburn Arts Council holds art adjudication

The Weyburn Arts Council held a successful local art adjudication at the Signal Hill Arts Centre on Friday night, with professional adjudicator Marsha Kennedy delivering critiques on the artwork of 14 local emerging artists.

Adjudicator Kennedy selected two artists she felt were ready to submit their works to the Provincial Adjudication next June, and if accepted, they will join the two-year OSAC 'Arts on the Move' program, whereby their works will be shown in 24 Saskatchewan communities.

The two artists who will be moving on to the provincial level will be Melody Kozmeniuk of Danbury, with her clay sculptures, and Weyburn's Barry Lautner, with his acrylic paintings entitled 'Saskatchewan Sealegs'.

The purpose of the annual art adjudication is to provide constructive criticism on each individual work and also on the artist's style in general. As a spin-off, the artists also gain much useful information from the other artists' critiques, since the event is a group process.

Local new and emerging artists gain a valuable opportunity to network and meet other members of the arts community and also the Weyburn Arts Council. It is also a good opportunity for the public to meet and show support for their local artists at the reception which was held on Friday evening.

Other artists involved in the local adjudication were Doris Anderson of Weyburn, with acrylic paintings on nature themes; Kathryn Groshong of Weyburn, with acrylic paintings with grain elevator themes; Grace Rose Holyer of Weyburn, mixed media on cloth with dream themes; Dorothy Howse of Khedive, oil paintings of rural landscapes; Derrick Ivany of Weyburn, walking sticks carved with dremmel tool; Regan Lanning of Halbrite, latex paintings with a floral theme; Darlene Martin of Goodwater, organic works of raku clay; Elnora Olan, oil paintings of floral scenes; Bev Sobush of Weyburn, winter scenes in watercolour; Mary-Jo Steve of Milestone, wood with woodburning and acrylic paint; Heather Stronge of Weyburn, works in pencil, pastel, ink and pencil crayon; and Leona Tessier of Weyburn, watercolours and an oil painting of various bird scenes.

Upcoming for the Weyburn Arts Council is an artist workshop called "Building Your Art Career" on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Signal Hill Arts Centre. All artists are welcome to join.
