Red Wings pick up five out of a possible six points

A natural hat trick by Josh Bray and a shutout by A.J. Whiffen marked a week that saw the Weyburn Red Wings pick up five of a possible six points last week.

A.J. Whiffen stopped 30 shots to pick up his second career shutout as the Weyburn Red Wings defeated the Battlefords North Stars 5-0 on Nov. 6 at the Colosseum.

Rhett Bly opened the scoring at 16:39 of the first period on the power play with assists from Josh Bray and Brayden Nargang. Scott Doody made the score 2-0 in the second period at 14:56, assisted by Michael Seib and Craig Cornelson.

Joel Langevin scored at 6:06 of the third period, assisted by Bray and Kyle Haines, and Preston Shupe put one past the goalie at 8:25, assisted by Torrey Lindsay, to give the Red Wings a 4-0 lead. Carter Selinger scored his first SJHL goal unassisted at 10:10 to round out the scoring. Weyburn outshot the North Stars 33-30.

The Red Wings were back at the Colosseum on Friday night to face the Kindersley Klippers where Bray picked up a natural hat trick in a 4-2 victory.

"Kindersley was a good game," said player Nick Needham. "We finally got our power play going with two goals and all around we played well from goaltender out."

Kindersley opened the scoring in the first period, but Bray tied the game at 17:19 of the second period, assisted by Stephen Simms and Torrey Lindsay. Bray have the Wings a 2-1 lead at 10:07 of the third period, assisted by Simms, and picked up the hat trick at 18:24 with assists from Nargang and Luke Johnson.

Seib added an empty net goal, assisted by Krukowski and Needham, to help pick up the win.

On Saturday, Weyburn was on the road and lost 4-3 to the Melville Millionaires in overtime.

"We killed penalties really well against Melville, which has one of the best power plays in the league," said assistant coach Darcy Pindus.

The first period ended 1-1 with the Weyburn goal coming at 18:39 from Johnson with an assist from Bly. Melville took a two-goal lead until Bray scored at 5:47 of the third period, assisted by Simms, and Doody tied up the game at 16:35 of the third period, assisted by Krukowski, at 16:35. Melville scored 1:13 into the overtime period.

Last week Whiffen was named the SJHL Goaltender of the Month for October. The 1989-born rookie from Grand Falls-Windsor, Nfld., has a record of 3-1-1 after five starts in October with a 1.59 goals against average and .949 save percentage.

For the year, Whiffen is third in the SJHL in goals against average at 1.96. He is 5-1-1 overall with a save percentage of .936.

Bray was also named forward of the week for his efforts against Kindersley and Melville.

The Red Wings will be back in action when they face Estevan in a home-and-home series with the Bruins. Game one is on Friday, Nov. 16, in Estevan and that will be followed on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Colosseum.
