Making play-dough men

A group of Grade 1 boys busily make play-dough men at one of several learning centres set up around the classroom on Thursday at Assiniboia Park School by intern Melissa Moffat, centre. The boys are, from left, Jason St. John, Joey An and Colton Zepick. Moffat set up the centres according to a new learning philosophy she studied on a Canadian Study Tour to Reggio Emilia, Italy. Through this approach, the students learn by exploration of various materials set up at different stations, covering seven key principles of learning. Other stations had rice, snow, lego blocks, paint, and transparent objects that were lit up on an overhead projector.

Coaching the captain in speed-stacking

St. Dominic student Kelsey Bax gives tips on speed-stacking technique to Red Wings captain Kyle Haines, during a visit by the Red Wings to the school on Thursday afternoon. Pairs of players split up and visited each classroom, taking part in activities or games and fielding questions from the students before handing out game tickets. The Wings players will be visiting each elementary school in Weyburn and in the surrounding region over the next few weeks.
