Defeat Nipawin and Melfort

Red Wings extend their points streak to 11 games

This past week the Weyburn Red Wings picked up victories against Nipawin and Melfort to extend their points streak to 11 games.

Weyburn hosted the Nipawin Hawks at the Colosseum on Nov. 27 and came away with a 6-4 win.

The Red Wings jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first period. Josh Bray started off the scoring at 2:13 with an assist from Brayden Nargang. Mick Pawlyshyn added the second goal, assisted by Scott Doody and Connor Krukowski, at 19:41.

After a scoreless second period, a total of eight goals were scored in the third period.

Michael Seib scored 41 seconds into the third to take a 3-0 lead with assists from Stephen Simms and Preston Shupe. Nipawin replied with three straight goals to tie the game, but Bray gave the Wings the lead back with assists from Luke Johnson and Nargang at 9:51.

"We got out of position and gave them a chance to get back into the game," said head coach Dwight McMillan.

Craig Cornelson found the back of the net, assisted by Doody and Nick Needham, at 10:05 to give the Red Wings a two-goal lead. The Hawks came within one goal, but Nargang found the empty net with 29 seconds left in the game. Picking up assists on the goal were Luke Johnson and Krukowski.

A.J. Whiffen got the start in goal and faced 28 shots by the Hawks. Weyburn's offence added 32 shots on the Nipawin goal.

On Friday, Whiffen picked up his fourth shutout of the season, downing the Melfort Mustangs 2-0 at the Colosseum, and sits two shutouts away from matching former Red Wing Terry Denike's record of six shutouts in a single season.

Whiffen turned aside 28 shots, while the Red Wings had 27 shots on the Melfort goaltender Ilia Ejov.

After a scoreless first period, Torrey Lindsay opened the scoring at 12:34 assisted by Seib and Shupe. Nargang added an empty net goal unassisted at 19:52 to put the Mustangs way.

"It was the first-place team in the north against the first-place team in the south. We were playing for first place overall in the league," McMillan said.

"Being number one in the league is really important," said Rhett Bly. "We felt we should've beat them last time. A.J. (Whiffen) stood on his head once again."

On Monday, the SJHL named Bly the rookie of the month for November. Bly had six goals and three assists in 12 games played in November. His biggest game came on Nov. 2 against the Humboldt Broncos, when he scored two goals and one assist. For the season, Bly has nine goals and five assists in 24 games.

"He has been great for us off and on the ice and he certainly deserves it," said McMillan.

"It makes it a lot easier to play well when the team is winning," Bly said.

Runner-up for player of the month awards were Whiffen for goalie of the month and Krukowski for defenceman of the month.

The Red Wings will play three road games in three nights starting in Nipawin on Friday, Dec. 7. The boys will then head to Flin Flon on Saturday, Nov. 8, and La Ronge on Sunday, Dec. 9.
