The Weyburn Senior Beavers are looking for a new head coach, as Coach Eldon Dallas will not be returning next season as he has taken on the additional responsibility of recruiting at Eastern Arizona. The closing date for applications is Saturday, Dec. 15, so that a successful candidate can be announced by Christmas. Executive president of the Beavers, Garnet Hansen, stated that he had received five applications from potential coaches as of Monday. As well, one of the advantages of coach Dallas' efforts during the season was "that he has been a great help as far as recruiting players for next summer, so although the coaching position has been vacant, our player recruiting is far ahead of where we would be normally at this time," said Hansen. The Senior Beavers have five returning American players from last year signed to contracts, along with the signing of two new prospects of both American and Canadian players in addition to returning local players. "We don't have many player spots to fill as it stands right now," said Hansen. The Western Major Baseball League (WMBL), which the Senior Beavers are a member of, had its annual general meeting over the weekend and it was determined that the league will continue to operate with 11 teams for the 2008 season with the possibility of adding one or two new franchises in the next two years. The Weyburn Senior Beavers ball club will once again undertake a giant 50/50 fundraiser, with tickets priced at one for $5, or three for $10. As the tickets are printed and ready to go, they will be sold just in time for Christmas. The club will sell the tickets all winter and spring, with the draw for the winner to be made in the seventh inning of the Beavers home opener of the season. Last year the club raised $2,300 after only one month of selling tickets; with more time to sell tickets this year the Beavers ball club is hoping to surpass that total by raising $4,000 to $5,000. Season tickets have also been printed and ready to go, with the prices the same as last year with senior passes costing $70 and adult passes costing $90. |
