The Weyburn Red Wings points streak came to an end at 12 games this past weekend, as the boys played three road games in three nights. They opened the weekend with a 3-2 shootout victory against the Nipawin Hawks on Friday in Nipawin. "We played fairly well," said head coach Dwight McMillan. "We played our typical defensive game and ended up winning it in a shootout." Weyburn began the scoring at 10:23 of the first period with Luke Johnson finding the back of the net of the power play, assisted by Connor Krukowski and Brayden Nargang. Nipawin found the equalizer at 11:17 of the first period. Rhett Bly scored at 6:47 of the second period to give the Red Wings the lead with Carter Selinger and Craig Cornelson picking up assists. Nipawin scored the tying goal 38 seconds into the third period shorthanded to send the game to overtime. After a scoreless overtime, it took 18 shooters before anyone could score in the shootout. Stephen Simms scored the game winner for the Wings. Also shooting for Weyburn in the shootout were Bly, Luke Johnson, Scott Doody, Nargang, Torrey Lindsay, Cornelson, Nick Needham and Preston Shupe. A.J. Whiffen picked up the win in net, facing 31 shots from the Hawks. Weyburn sent 39 shots at the Nipawin net. McMillan felt that some players played better than others. In particular, he felt that Luke Johnson and Doody were the best players on the ice. Saturday's game against the Flin Flon Bombers brought the Red Wings streak to a halt at 12 games, as Weyburn was defeated 7-2. Nargang opened the scoring at 1:22 of the first period with assists from Bly and Luke Johnson, but Flin Flon tied the game 15 seconds later. The Bombers added two more goals before the end of the first period and scored twice in the second period. "We were flat and they got two goals of the funny variety," McMillan said. "Once they get ahead you have to open up." Following the Bombers' second goal in the second period, Whiffen got the hook and Tanner Erickson took over between the pipes. Flin Flon made it 6-1 at 1:35 of the third period before Adam Feniak scored his first SJHL goal at 2:02 to bring the Red Wings within four of the Bombers. Flin Flon added one last insurance goal on the power play to down the Wings. Flin Flon outshot the Red Wings 47-23. "We had opportunities to score and that could have changed things," McMillan said. Weyburn's road woes continued on Sunday, when they were defeated 4-1 by the La Ronge Ice Wolves. After 40 minutes, La Ronge was ahead 3-0 and added a fourth goal 15 seconds into the third period. The Red Wings attempted a short-lived comeback with Josh Bray lighting the lamp at 5:04 of the third assisted by Lindsay and Michael Seib. Whiffen faced 40 shots in goal and the Red Wings were outshot 40-32. "Our penalty killing fell down," McMillan said. "The penalty killing had problems and they have a great power play." McMillan added that his team will be working on the power play and penalty killing this week leading into the upcoming games, something that his team struggled with during Sunday's game. The Canadian Junior "A" Hockey League announced their national rankings on Monday. Although the Red Wings did not crack the top 15, they did receive an honourable mention. Weyburn currently sits in first place in the Sherwood Conference with 19 wins, 10 losses, two overtime losses and four shootout losses for 44 points. They are ahead of Melville by two points, however, the Millionaires have three games in hand. The Wings will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 15, when Weyburn travels to Melville to take on the Millionaires. They will then head home on Sunday, Dec. 16, to face the Humboldt Broncos at the Colosseum at 7:30 p.m. |
