This past week saw the Bantam Crescent Point Bantam AA Wings play both home and away games, picking up four of six points. On Wednesday, the Notre Dame AAA team traveled to Weyburn to end Crescent Point's winning streak. The first period saw Weyburn's only goal of the game, as Tayler Balog sniped a goal past the Hounds goalie after receiving a pass from Brent Benson and the period ended in a Weyburn lead. During the second period, Notre Dame came back to score a deuce, giving them a one-goal lead going into the third. The third period saw many scoring opportunities for Weyburn, but Notre Dame held strong. Nate Ferris played a stellar game between the pipes against the Notre Dame Hounds, stopping all but five shots on net. The Crescent Point Bantam AA Wings skated to a pair of South Saskatchewan Hockey League road victories during weekend play. On Saturday, the CP Wings downed the Regina Hurricanes in a final score of 6-4. The first period saw three unanswered goals as Garett Walbaum, Balog and Benson each lit the lamp post. The second period of play had the Hurricanes destroy the Wings lead as two quick power play goals were attained and then another third goal to tie the game 3-3. With little over a minute left in the second period, Walbaum's second goal of the game gave the CP Wings a 4-3 lead. Early in the third period, Walbaum scored his hat trick on a breakaway opportunity, increasing the lead to 5-3. The Hurricanes fought back to score yet another goal. However, late in the period during power play action, Walbaum's fourth goal of the night secured the Wings' lead as well as the victory for Weyburn. Teammates credited for the play-making opportunities included Reid Jackson with four assists, Brandon McClarty, Derrick Pouliot and Benson with two assists, and single assists went to Casey Pirio and Ashton Sautner. Cody Sjostrand was credited with the win in net as the Wings out shot the Hurricanes 59-18. On Sunday, the CP Wings hammered the Lumsden/Bethune Lions 14-1 in their home den. The first period of play ended with the 4-0 lead as Walbaum, Balog, Josh Lees and Cody "Mad Dog" Miller each sniped single goals. Early in the second period, John Cugnet scored a thrilling shorthanded goal to increase the lead. Walbaum, Sautner and Pirio left their goal markers as well. The Lions had their lone goal late in the second period. During the third period, the CP Wings again gained unrelenting momentum as Walbaum completed his hat trick for the second time during the weekend play. Benson scored another shorthanded goal and single goals were sniped by Pirio, Pouliot, Dayton Picard and Sautner. Teammates credited for their playmaking abilities included Jackson with five assists, Benson with four, Pouliot with three, as well as single assists from McClarty, Cugnet, Miller, Lees and Cody Thue. Nate Ferris picked up the win in net as the Wings out shot the Lions 56-13. Coach Murray Benson stated, "The coaching staff were very happy with our games against Notre Dame and Lumsden/Bethune. In the Notre Dame game we took on the powerful AAA Hounds and gave them an excellent game. The players came out flying against the Lions. We mixed up the lines and they seemed to respond to the change. We look forward to the Saskatoon Knights Tournament Jan. 4 to 6 and to our first round of provincials Jan. 12 and 13 against Estevan." |
