Local curler Brennen Jones took part in the men's Canada Cup qualifier in Ottawa, Ont. from Dec. 12 to 16. Jones, who throws second stones, curled out of Kerrobert with skip Brad Heidt, third Mitch Heidt and lead Drew Heidt. Their first game was Wednesday night, losing to the Mark Johnson rink out of Edmonton 6-5. Johnson held the hammer in the first end, but the Heidt rink stole one to take an early lead. In the third end, Heidt took three with the hammer to make the score 4-2 in favour of the Saskatchewan rink. Johnson took points in the fifth and sixth end to tie the game and Heidt took one in the seventh end. Up one coming home without the hammer, Heidt gave up two in the 10th end for the loss. Their next match up on the B-side bracket was against Guy Hemmings from Sorel-Tracy, Que. Hemmings opened with the hammer as the two teams traded single points for the first four ends. Heidt stole one in the fifth end before the teams traded points in six and seven to make the score 5-4 for Heidt. Hemmings tied the game in the eighth and stole the winning point in the tenth end. The Heidt team was eliminated from the tournament on Wednesday evening against the Jim Sullivan rink from Saint John, N.B., losing 8-4. Sullivan took three with the hammer in the third and stole singles in the fourth and fifth ends to take a 6-1 lead at the fifth end break. Heidt took a single with the hammer in the sixth end and stole in the seventh and eighth took close the gap to 6-4, but it wasn't enough. The top four teams from the qualifier will move on to the Canada Cup, which takes place from Wednesday, March 12, to Monday, March 17, in Kamloops, B.C. |
