Penta Gold Wings take 2 weekend losses, OT win

The Penta Gold Wings fell in the standings, after taking two losses over the weekend to the Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats. They did take an overtime win over the Regina Rebels on Dec. 11, which tied them for points with Melville.

"We didn't have our best effort. Swift Current was very good in their power play and had some nice plays that beat our goaltenders," said head coach Jim Onstad.

During the Dec. 15 game, Swift Current used their power play advantage to win 6-0 over the Gold Wings. Four of these goals were during a powerplay, and the majority of the goals were taken in the second period.

Swift Current also out-shot Weyburn in the Saturday night game, taking a total of 38 shots on the Gold Wing net. The Gold Wings attempted 20 times to score against Swift Current, with no success that evening.

Facing Swift Current again on Sunday, the Gold Wings took a 7-1 loss. The lone goal for the Gold Wings was taken by Paige Wheeler, off an assist by Marla Ives during a power play in the first period. Swift Current gained two goals of their own in the first period, taking the lead.

Swift Current continued to dominate the game, taking three goals in the second period and two in the third period. This time, only one of their seven goals was on a power play.

The Penta Gold Wings had taken a win on Dec. 11, fighting for a 3-2 overtime win over the Regina Rebels. Regina had taken an early lead, scoring two goals in the first period while Weyburn was unable to get any of their nine shots on the net past the Rebel goaltender.

In the second period, a goal by Ashley Kirkpatrick, assisted by Deirdra Ashworth, got the Gold Wings back into the game. Rianne Wight tied the game in the third period, assisted by Stefany Rankin and Paige Bertwistle. This took the game into an overtime period, as goaltender Jami Cudmore and the defensive team kept Regina from scoring any more goals. To win the game, the overtime goal was earned by Paige Wheeler, working once again with teammate Wight off the assist.

The Gold Wings play Prince Albert on Saturday, Dec. 22, at 8 p.m. at the Weyburn Colosseum. This will be their last game before the Christmas break.

"It would be nice to have a win going into the Christmas break, so that we meet our longtime goal to be a playoff team," said Onstad.

Playoffs are scheduled in the last week of February, with the Gold Wings scheduled for five more regular season games before the playoffs are held. Their win-loss record is currently 6-9-1.
