Four players as well as the Weyburn Red Wings coaching staff will be taking part in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's all-star game on Sunday, Jan. 20 in Yorkton. Defenceman Kyle Haines and forwards Preston Shupe, Brayden Nargang and Torrey Lindsay will be on the roster for the Sherwood Conference all-star team. Local product Haines, a six-foot-tall 185-pound defenceman, has played 39 games this season. He has one goal and 19 assists for 20 points and 59 penalty minutes. Haines will be playing in his second SJHL all-star game of his career after being named a starter in last season. "Haines is a very solid defenceman who can play five-on-five, penalty kill and the power play. He is our captain and the leader on our team," said head coach Dwight McMillan. "I was quite surprised this morning when I woke up and saw the all-star rosters posted on the web site," said Haines. "I'm excited to be going for the second year in a row." The 1988-born Shupe is also a local product who has played all 40 games this season, tallying 13 goals and 25 assists for 38 points and 18 penalty minutes. This is Shupe's first SJHL all-star game. "Shupe just works hard and comes to play every day," McMillan said. "It is definitely an honour, but it also reflects on the guys that I play with too," Shupe said. Nargang, a six-foot-one 200-pound 19-year-old from Edenwold, Sask., is the only Red Wing with major junior experience who was named to the all-star team. He has racked up 16 goals and 17 assists for 33 points in 35 games. This will be his first all-star appearance. "It is a big honour to be picked by other coaches to play among the best players in the league," Nargang said. Lindsay has tallied 14 goals and 23 assists for 37 points in 40 games this season with the Red Wings. The five-foot-nine 165-pound 19-year-old from Grosse Isle, Man., was acquired by the Red Wings on Aug. 15 prior to training camp from the Port Hope Predators of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League in exchange for Sean Bassingthwaite. "I didn't really know what to expect when I came to this league. It is a big honour," Lindsay said. The SJHL all-stars are determined by way of a voting process by the league's head coaches with criteria that stipulate coaches are forbidden from voting for their own players. McMillan did feel that there are problems with the decision-making process as he felt there were two or three players on his team that missed out. Behind the bench will be head coach Dwight McMillan, assistant coaches Darcy Pindus and Tyler McMillan, manager Ron Rumball and trainers Tom Sanders, Don Pindus and Edward Istace. The Red Wings also employ safety person Ward Borys. "I have been there many times, but it is good for Darcy, Tyler, our trainers and everyone get to be a part of it," McMillan said. McMillan added that if it weren't for the players going out and doing their job, the coaching staff wouldn't have the opportunity to be a part of the all-star game. The coaching staff for each division is determined by the team with the best winning percentage. The Red Wings staff had a winning percentage of .641, 50 points in 39 games, at the end of December. They beat out the Kindersley Klippers coaching staff that held a winning percentage of .615 at the end of December. |
