The Weyburn Police Service report that the holiday season was relatively quiet, as they patrolled the city area for impaired drivers or other traffic offences. During the busiest part of the holidays, from Dec. 20 until Jan. 1, the city police laid three charges of impaired driving and three for driving while over .08. In addition, there was one 24-hour suspension, and three 30-day suspensions, all relating to drinking and driving. Over the entire course of December, there were nine alcohol and gaming regulation charges, most of which were for having open liquor in a car, and there were 123 Traffic Safety Act charges for other driving offences, such as driving without a seatbelt. Seatbelt usage was the other main target of police through the holidays. Inspector Russ Chartrand said throughout the month there were planned CheckStops, some in conjunction with the RCMP when members were available, as well as random checks by patrol cars. "We want to be out there with high visibility, but we also want to catch those who drive around the CheckStops," he said. The number of drunk driving charges weren't considered that high, he added, as he noted there is more traffic out in December and social activities where drinking takes place. |
