Work is underway for T.C. Douglas statue, funds needed

An internationally-renowned sculptor, Lea Vivot, has indicated that preparations to complete a life-size bronze statue of "The Greatest Canadian", Tommy Douglas, is well underway.

A local committee organized to act as a liaison with Vivot has been in contact with her after the sculptor made an offer to the City of Weyburn to provide a life-sized statue of the late premier. The committee over the last year has been working with Vivot on design ideas for the statue, and now the work is going ahead.

It is estimated the commercial value of such a statue would be around $270,000. The community will need to raise around $40,000 to cover the cost of materials to install the statue in the city.

Anyone interested in sharing in this tribute to Tommy Douglas, voted by a national audience as "The Greatest Canadian", can do so by making a cheque out to "The T.C. Douglas Statue Fund" and forwarding it to any of the committee members: Ross McMurtry, Isabelle Butters or Gerald Alexander.

A tax receipt for any donations will be issued by the City of Weyburn.

It is with grateful anticipation the committee looks forward to a positive response from the community.
