Deer easily finding food this winter

Deer population and feeding is once again a non-issue for local conservation officers with a mild winter leaving very little ground cover, allowing the deer to easily find food.

"They are able to scrounge out on their own because there is no snow cover," said conservation office Gordon Smoliak. "We have had another exceptional winter."

Smoliak added that, since the Weyburn area has had mild winters for the past two or three year, there has been a low fatality rate for deer and other animals due to winter conditions. In some cases, it has actually helped the deer population.

"That increases the fawning rates, they will have twins and triplets in some instances," said Smoliak.

There have been no reports to the conservation officers so far this winter regarding deer or other animals eating bales, in people's yards in the city or causing traffic hazards.

"The grain came off early. We had a hot summer and everyone got their combining done so the migrating birds didn't affect anything," Smoliak said.
