Second place finish slips away from Peewee Wings

The Crescent Point Energy Wings played their final regular season game on Wednesday and came up short in their bid to finish second place in the league.

The Estevan Bruins downed the hometown Weyburn squad by a score of 5-2. Scoring for Weyburn were Rhett Williams and Cole Sjostrand with assists going to Reece Williams and Braden Mellon.

Weyburn will now play Moose Jaw and Coronach in home-and-home battles to determine if they move on to the second round of the playoffs.

The Wings were then in Brandon for a tournament starting on Thursday afternoon where they played the Moose Jaw Warriors and came away with a 4-1 victory.

The next game was against the Macdonald Twisters team. The Wings started out well, but quickly ran out of gas and fell by an 8-1 final. Friday saw the boys play a team from Elkhorn and the result was not pretty with the Wings coming out on the short end of a 10-0 score.

Saturday brought on the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Wings were able to get back to the winners' circle with a 6-1 victory, setting up a match with the St. James Canadians for the consolation championship.

St. James came out fast and grabbed a 2-0 lead, but the Wings battled back to tie the game and send it to overtime. With less than a minute left, a St. James attacker picked up the puck and scored the winner.

Top point getters for the weekend were Cole Sjostrand and Rhett Williams with six points each, Reece Williams had four points followed by Brody Farr with three points and Nick Zerie and Konrad Proszak with two points each. Scoring single points were Kyle Mryglod, Braden Mellon, Karsen Ness, Jared Skwara, Justin Dreis, Ketter Hoium and Aaron Dionne.

The next action for the Wings will be Saturday, Feb. 16, when they travel to Moose Jaw for their first playoff game.
