Soo Line Museum has over 2,500 visit in 2007

The annual general meeting of the Soo Line Historical Museum was held on Feb. 4. During a review of the museum's activities in the last year, the executive discussed attendance, volunteer hours, special events, membership, requests for tourist information and other items.

Attendance in 2007 was on par for the previous year, with 2,544 people visiting the museum. Of these, 13 were guided tours.

Requests for tourist information increased greatly from the previous year, with an influx of 350 people to 1,454 visitors to the city looking for tourist information.

The Soo Line Museum held 13 special events in 2007, and welcomed five new members.

The executive was elected for the new year, with Art Wallace as president, David Carlson as vice president, Brenda King as secretary and Louise Rumball in treasurer.

A special event for this year will be upcoming on Wednesday, Feb. 20, when the museum will be celebrating Heritage Day with a featured presentation of "Way Back Then" with Art Wallace and Jim Nedelcov. The event starts at 2 p.m. and will highlight the history of Weyburn. There is no charge to attend, with a silver collection being accepted.

Fundraising for the Soo Line Museum this year will include annual museum passes being sold, an opportunity to purchase a silver polishing kit, and Weyburn souvenirs being sold in the museum gift shop.

The museum is also working on three projects, including looking for local stories for a history project, an on-line history project of the Weyburn Mental Hospital and compiling a self-guided tour brochure of the historic downtown of Weyburn.

For more information on any of the fundraising projects, special events or how to contribute to the history projects, residents are asked to contact the Soo Line Museum.
