Many events in 'Praise of Women' to span four days

Events spanning four days will be held in Weyburn to help expand the celebration of International Women's Day, including an art exhibit and auction, a play about Nellie McClung, displays and exhibits, a music performance and a performance of the one-man play about Tommy Douglas.

The combination of events comes as a result of the several groups involved getting together and cooperating with a full schedule, from Thursday, March 6 through to Sunday, March 9, said organizer John Nolan.

Nolan helped bring in Yorkton actress Wendy Stricker to do a portrayal of Nellie McClung, who helped bring the vote to women in Canada, and will later perform his one-man play, The Arrows of Desire, about Tommy Douglas, on Sunday.

The four-day event kicks off on Thursday with the start of the exhibition, In Praise of Women, at the Signal Hill Art Gallery, starting at 7 p.m. The evening will include an auction of art, with proceeds to go to the Violence Intervention Program.

The story of Nellie McClung, one of the Famous Five Canadian women who fought for the vote and were involved in the Persons Case.

"Every Canadian woman should be acquainted with this vital chapter in Canadian history," said Nolan. "I'd venture not many women of any age know the sacrifice Nellie and her compatriots suffered in securing the rights of all women."

The performances by Stricker will take place at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, March 7 and 8, at the T.C. Douglas Centre, with advance tickets available for $15 each.

Saturday will also feature a luncheon hosted by the Family Place at Calvary Baptist Church from noon to 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each.

Also in conjunction with this weekend, Calvary Baptist Church is presenting the group Glory Bound, which specialize in Southern and country Gospel harmonies. They will perform on Saturday at 5 p.m., and Sunday, March 9 at 10:30 a.m., as part of the morning worship service.

Visitors to Weyburn over the weekend also have the opportunity to tour some of Weyburn's unique tourist attractions, such as the Charlie Wilson Silver Collection at the Soo Line Historical Museum; the Signal Hill Gallery; the Turner Curling Museum; The Family Place; and the Weyburn Inland Terminal.

On Sunday, Nolan will do an encore performance of Tommy Douglas at 1:30 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church. Nolan has just returned from Ontario productions with his Phantom Poets play, and presents the play as a part of the weekend in honour of women. This one-hour version of his one-man play will be performed with tickets available for $10 each.
