Facing Kindersley in second round

Red Wings shut out by the Melville Millionaires

The Weyburn Red Wings will face the Kindersley Klippers in the second round of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League playoffs after being shutout by Melville on Feb. 26 and losing the Selection Series.

On Feb. 26, the Red Wings dropped a 6-0 fight-filled decision to the Melville Millionaires at the Colosseum.

Melville opened the scoring on the power play in the first period and held a 3-0 lead after the second period. The Moneymen went up 5-0 in the third period before Red Wings goaltender A.J. Whiffen was pulled in favour of Tanner Erickson.

"We got ourselves in trouble because we gave them a couple five-on-three situations and they scored on both of them," said head coach Dwight McMillan. "The third goal was a good play on us. We tried to open up the game and get some goals and things didn't work out."

Frustration set in 34 seconds after Melville's final goal when a brawl broke out between the two teams. A total of 146 penalty minutes were handed out by referee Todd Sharpe after the dust settled.

"What happened was the Melville player speared our guy in the back of the leg to begin with and they were grabbing over guys over the boards (during the scrum)," said McMillan. "The guys have to stick up for each other."

Receiving penalties for the Red Wings were Connor Krukowski for fighting and a game misconduct; Eric Calibaba for goaltender interference; Justin Crockatt for fighting and a game misconduct; Shawn Courtney received six minutes for leaving the penalty bench, fighting and two game misconducts; and Nick Needham received a fighting penalty and a game misconduct.

For the Millionaires, Jeremie Houde received a roughing after the whistle; Jordan Reeve received a fighting penalty; Curtis Beech got six minutes for leaving the penalty bench, fighting and two game misconduct penalties; and Jordan Wilson received a fighting penalty and a game misconduct.

The league came down hard on the Red Wings a day after the melee. Courtney was suspended for the remainder of the Selection Series as well as Games one and two of the Sherwood Conference semifinal for leaving the penalty bench to participate in a multiple fight.

Krukowski, Calibaba and Needham were suspended from the balance of the Selection Series for taking part in a multiple fight, however Melville won the series before the Wings had a chance to play another game. The Red Wings organization was also fined $600 for being deemed instigators of the multiple fight by having a player leave the penalty box to participate in a fight.

In a controversial decision, the league only fined the Melville Millionaires $400 for inappropriate team/player conduct on the bench during a multiple fight.

It was a disappointing Selection Series for the Red Wings, as they finished last in the standings with two losses.

"We didn't come out with the same intensity that we did in the regular season," said Erickson, who saw his first playoff action against Melville. "If we play with that same intensity it should get us far in the playoffs."

Melville went on to defeat Kindersley 3-2 Thursday to win the Selection Series. Melville chose to play the winner of the Elimination Series, the Yorkton Terriers, to pit Weyburn against Kindersley in the second round of the SJHL playoffs.

"We have to come out with more of the spark," said right winger Luke Johnson. "But most importantly we have to keep working hard, have a positive attitude and have some fun."

Game one of the series is slated for Friday, March 7, and game two will go on Saturday, March 8. Both games will be played at the Colosseum at 7:30 p.m. Game three will be on Tuesday, March 11, in Kindersley.
