The Fillmore Falcons girls' basketball team tasted victory once again, earning their seventh provincial championship in the last eight year by winning the 1A girls category at Hoopla, the Provincial Basketball Championship for Saskatchewan high schools, held over the weekend in Saskatoon. The Falcons boys' team also competed at Hoopla, and came away with a fourth place finish. The Falcons met last year's provincial champions, the Eatonia Spartans, in their semi-final game. The Falcons got a fast start with a 24-9 lead after the first quarter, but Eatonia narrowed the gap to six points at the half, with the Falcons leading 32-26. The Fillmore team increased their lead to 47-38 by the end of the third quarter, and defeated the Spartans by a final score of 63-48. Rebounder Amber Leguee led all scorers with 20 points, followed by Amanda Ogden with 14 points. Raquel Kosior contributed 11 points, and Ashton Kosior and Jill Stewart each added nine points to the final score. The victory set up the final game against the Middle Lake Avengers. The Fillmore girls scored early and often, establishing a 28-9 lead after the first quarter. By half-time, the Falcons increased the lead to 46-12. In the second half, the Fillmore coaches Tracey Ogden, Blair Stewart and Sarah Leguee utilized all of their players off the bench, and rested off their starters. The third quarter point spread was 57-23, and the final score was 70-27. The top scorers were the starting lineup consisting of Amber Leguee, Ashton Kosior, Amanda Ogden, Raquel Kosior and Jill Stewart. The girls were cheered on not only by over 100 Fillmore supporters in the stands, but by the Weyburn Comp Eagles senior girls basketball team, who went on to win the 4A provincial championship at Hoopla. The Falcons in turn were the stands cheering for the Eagles at their games. The decisive victory was followed by the presentation of medals and a large shield to the 2008 Provincial 1A Champions, the Fillmore 33 Central Falcon girls' basketball team and their coaches. The Falcon boys met the Regina Harvest City Reapers in the semi-final game. The Falcons had a difficult time coping with Harvest City's constant press and accurate shooting. Fillmore fell behind by a score of 17-10 in the first quarter, and finished the first half behind by a score of 34-18. The third quarter score was 55-27 in favour of Harvest City, and the final score was 76-48, relegating the Falcons to the bronze medal game against the Rose Valley Roadrunners. The top scorer for the Falcons boys team was Tanner Hanson with 23 points. In the bronze medal game, the Fillmore Falcon boys fell behind by a score of 11-7 in the first quarter. The half-time score was 25-17 in favour of Rose Valley. The Falcons were behind by 14 points by the end of the third quarter. The boys came alive defensively and offensively in the fourth quarter, but they fell short, losing by four points with the final score 52-48 for Rose Valley. The boys were again led by Tanner Hanson's scoring touch. The coaches, Darryl Charron, Chris Boardman and Andrew Kidd tried various combinations of players to achieve victory. The boys played valiantly, but had to settle for a fourth place finish at Hoopla. |
