Hounds win brings season to an end for Gold Wings

The season has officially come to an end for the Weyburn Penta Gold Wings, as they lost their final game in the semi-final playoffs against Notre Dame 13-3. The Hounds captured the win on March 11 at the Tom Zandee Sports Arena.

Competition between the two teams was even-handed in the first period. Notre Dame kicked off goal scoring at 17:58, and the score was then tied by the Gold Wings at 13:17 on a power play. Bethany Nickel scored the goal, with assists from Amy Kelbaugh and Stefany Rankin. Notre Dame scored a second goal at 12:43, then the Gold Wings tied it again as Paige Wheeler scored at 8:48 off assists by Rianne Wight and Marla Ives. With a goal in the last 20 seconds by Notre Dame, the first period was a tight 3-2 game.

At the top of the second period, a power play goal scored by Gold Wing Marla Ives tied the game again at 18:56, with the assist by Wheeler. It was at that point when Notre Dame went on the offensive, they took a power play goal at 17:17, followed by three more resounding goals in the Gold Wing net to finish off the period 7-3.

By keeping the Gold Wings from gaining any further goals, the Notre Dame Hounds pounded in six more goals in the third period to capture the win. By defeating the Gold Wings, Notre Dame will now advance to the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League finals to face off against Swift Current.

While the season is over, the Penta Gold Wings are already planning for the 2008-09 season. The team will be holding a spring identification camp for any bantam or midget hockey players who are interested in being identified by the Weyburn Penta Gold Wings scouting staff. The camp will run in Weyburn on March 29 and 30.

Two Gold Wing players completed their final year at the midget AAA level this year, and will be continuing to pursue the sport at the university level. Paige Wheeler and Rianne Wight have both committed themselves to the University of Regina for next season.
