Emergency crews on standby

Weyburn fire and rescue crew members prepare equipment and wait for the word to go in to the scene of a train derailment eight km southeast of Ralph alongside Highway 39 on Monday morning. The toxicity of the materials on fire and in nearby tankers kept the fire fighters back at the roadblock set up by the RCMP about a kilometre from the derailment site. Due to those dangerous chemicals, a number of area residents that were downwind were evacuated and put up in hotels for the night, while traffic on Highway 39 was rerouted until the highway was opened on Tuesday morning. The fire was put out around 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Some of the chemicals nearest the fire included glycol (antifreeze), vinyl acetate (used in wood glue) and fumes from an empty butane tanker.
