City unveils slogan

Tourism Weyburn, in partnership with the City of Weyburn, unveiled the city's new slogan, "This Is Our Weyburn Come Discover Yours!", at a press conference at City Hall on Thursday.

Tourism Weyburn manager Lacey Johnston said that the new marketing slogan, which will be used on the City website, advertisements and other marketing opportunities, will add continuity to all forms of marketing for the City.

"It will give the image to visitors of the beauty and excitement that this community has to offer," said Johnston.

Mayor Debra Button spoke on how Weyburn is riding on high times right now, and this new slogan shows the pride of the community and invites others to share that pride.

"I am sure all of the new residents feel the joy and pride of living in this city," said Button.

She added that residents have been told for years that "the grass was greener in other places," but EnCana's CO2 project, the high price of oil, the rise in construction and the raising grain prices are putting Weyburn on the map.

Councillor Dick Michel expressed "his Weyburn" as an exciting place where there is always something going on.

Michel said that this new slogan invites visitors to enjoy the many activities around the city. One of the areas that Michel focused on was Jubilee Park.

"Where else can you play tennis, fly a kite, go rollerblading, walk your dog, watch your children or grandchildren play soccer or ball, attend a swim meet, ride your bike, skate to the outdoor rink, watch on outdoor movie in the summertime or just lay on a blanket and gaze at the stars? All of this can be found in one location," said Coun. Michel

Coun. Bill Rudachyk talked about a few of the opportunities that opened up for him and his family as citizens of Weyburn, and how this new slogan invites others to have their own Weyburn experience.

Rudachyk said he moved here with his wife Dona in 1971 with the full intention of eventually moving on. Dona has now been a pharmacist in the city for 37 years and Rudachyk taught at the Weyburn Comprehensive School for 30 years before retiring and is currently the general manager at the Weyburn Golf Club.

"Both of us have had an array of opportunities to appreciate," said Rudachyk.

Rudachyk added that fastball, curling, golf, hockey and baseball were just a few of the sports that he has been involved with. He has sat on city council for six terms and is active in provincial and federal politics.

Rudachyk said he has raised two sons and one daughter in Weyburn and couldn't think of a better community to raise children.

Weyburn Chamber of Commerce president Brent Allin expressed his appreciation for the new slogan.

"It is a good day to launch this new strategy for those in the area, around the country and from abroad to take advantage of Weyburn and what it has to offer in retail, financial services and other areas that our members provide service to," said Allin.

Allin said that one of the great upcoming events that the city holds, Hospitality in the Park, helps attract people from across Canada and the United States which, in turn, helps the local economy.

"Each night during the summer months campers at River Park can come out, have a coffee and a cookie, and visit with members of our city to give it a personal feel," said Allin.

Allin added that new to this year's Hospitality of the Park will be a coupon book that will be offered to the campers to encourage them to shop in Weyburn.
