Farmers in the Weyburn area have a growing concern for winter wheat survival and hay and pasture growth, as continued dry conditions affect the area. Seeding of crops has had huge progress in the last week, according to Elaine Moats, crop specialist for Weyburn and area. "Most producers have three-fourths of their crop land seeded, for most of the area. Early crops are starting to emerge for many producers." Moats stated, "What has really hurt the moisture conditions has been the wind, as it just sucks the moisture out of the soil. There are a lot of producers who are concerned about continuing seeding." "With the recent dry conditions, farmers have been progressing steadily with seeding operations and we can definitely see the end of our seeding season," said producer Jeff Gaab. "It would really be nice to be able to have a good downpour, so that our moisture conditions improve. Our first crops are starting to emerge and they are looking to be in okay condition." "We sure have seen the warm weather help advance germination," he added. |
