Former local resident Rosemary Flaaten has been shortlisted in a national writing competition for her book, A Woman and Her Relationships. Flaaten (née Sheppard, formerly of Pangman) is a finalist in the Word Guild Awards, which is Canada's top Christian literary award. The winner will be announced on June 11 at a black-tie awards gala in Mississauga, Ont., with awards to be presented in 30 categories, including non-fiction books, novels, articles, columns, poems, scripts and song lyrics. In total, there were 225 entries from writers in eight provinces. "I am incredibly excited to be shortlisted for this award. I am hearing from so many readers that the principles laid out in 'A Woman and Her Relationships' have had a significant impact on the health of their relationships," said Flaaten. In her book, she challenges the reader to consider that if she were to keep God in first place, how her relationships with her family, herself and with God would be transformed. Flaaten launched her book at the Weyburn Public Library on Dec. 12, 2007 to a full house. Since the release of the book, she has had many opportunities for book signings, speaking and media exposure, including most recently being interviewed on the national TV show, 100 Huntley Street. She has had over 25 years of experience leading small groups, spiritual mentoring and counselling, and is presently the community leader for the Professional Women's Network in Calgary. She holds an MA in Christian counselling, and a Bachelor of Education. |
