MLA reflects on spring sitting

By SABRINA KRAFT of the Weyburn Review

The new Saskatchewan Party government recently completed an effective and busy spring session, according to Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA Dustin Duncan. "I think that spring session was a very productive one for the government, which led to a lot of positive benefits for the province of Saskatchewan. We delivered on over 60 election promises, with 40 of these in the budget, and as we move forward into the summer people will see positive results from the work that we were able to do."

For Duncan, some of the highlights from the spring session
included infrastructure investments, work on labour legislation, and introducing the Graduate Retention Program.

"In our budget, we announced a billion dollars in infrastructure spending, which will go into highways, schools and hospitals throughout the province," said Duncan. "We had quite an infrastructure deficit from the previous government and while it will not be an immediate solution, this investment will go a long way to fixing those problems."

"We also did a lot of work on labour legislation, to make Saskatchewan competitive with the rest of Canada," said Duncan. "It was interesting to watch the many hours of work on the amendments on the essential services and the trade union act bills. In my time in Legislature I can't remember two bills that received as much scrutiny and debate by members of the legislature."

A more personal highlight for Duncan was the passing of the Graduate Retention Program. "It was a realization of the work I was able to complete while acting as the MLA Responsible for Youth Opportunities under the previous government. It is a really ambitious and aggressive plan to keep our young people."

As well as having a busy spring session, the Saskatchewan Party government also welcomed news of growth and prosperity all over the province. "We broke past the one million mark for population, and saw more people moving here from Alberta than the other way around," said Duncan.

"For myself, it has been an interesting time sitting as MLA for Weyburn-Big Muddy, because due to things like the record sales in oil and gas, there is a lot of discussion around the caucus table of what is happening in my constituency," said Duncan. "It has been an exciting time representing an area that is getting a lot of attention from people all around the world."

Throughout the summer, Duncan will also be gathering feedback on the education portion on property tax and a long-term revenue sharing deal with the municipalities. Both of these issues will be worked on when the Legislature returns to session in the fall. "We have already delivered on several election promises so far and will continue to work at looking at those issues we have not addressed yet."

Duncan is continuing to encourage visits from more provincial ministers to the constituency over the summer and is looking forward to attending many events throughout the constituency this summer.
