Hilkewich breaks golf course record

Carter Hilkewich made history on Wednesday during men's night at the Weyburn Golf Club, shooting a course record 63.

The record was previously held by Weyburn native and Canadian Golf Tour professional Graham DeLaet, who shot a 64 at the Crocus Masters Championship on June 22, 2002.

"It is pretty exciting. It is a big accomplishment and DeLaet is a pretty good golfer," said the 21-year-old Hilkewich, who attends Minot State University on a golf scholarship.

Hilkewich shot a six-under-par 30 on the front nine and a three-under-par 33 on the back nine. Most holes saw Hilkewich shoot either a three or four except for shooting par on one of the par-fives. He was partnered that night with Kyle Hoium, Dave Barber and David Wagner.

"In the last three holes, I was able to sink a couple of birdies and shot par on a par-five and I figured I was close (to the record). I thought I was tied going in," said Hilkewich.

Hilkewich, the son of Kelly and Laurie, said previously his lowest scores were 66 and 67 in tournament play.

In the fall of 2007, Hilkewich had an average score of 76.8. This includes a 76 at the Bismarck State tournament, 75 at the Jimmie Open, 74 and 77 at the DSU tournament, 77 and 79 at the Jamestown tournament, and 77 and 80 at the Minot tournament.
