Local student qualifies for high school rodeo final

Weyburn Comprehensive Grade 12 student Meagan Chuckry has earned a position on the Saskatchewan Provincial high school rodeo team and will be traveling with fellow teammates to Farmington, N.M., from Sunday, July 20, to Saturday, July 26, to compete at the 60th annual National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) in the girls cutting event.

Chuckry was the winner of the provincial rodeo final that took place at Wood Mountain.

This event will feature over 1,500 contestants from 41 states, five provinces, and Australia. In addition to competing for over $200,000 in prizes, NHSFR contestants will also be vying for more than $325,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named the National High School Rodeo Champion.

To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 after two go-arounds of intense competition before advancing to Saturday night's final championship performance.

Along with great rodeo competition and the chance to meet new friends from around the world, NHSFR contestants have the opportunity to represent their team in a volleyball and basketball tournament.

Contestants will also enjoy nightly dances including a Cowboy Prom, participate in a talent contest, compete in an NRA rifle shooting competition, test their skills in a Knowledge Bowl competition, shop at the ever-popular NHSFR western trade show, and visit the historical attractions of the Land of Enchantment.
