Facing Melville and Saskatoon on home diamond advantage, the Weyburn Senior Beavers played some very tight games with often the last inning being the deciding factor for the team. By winning these three home games, the Beavers tied their record 4-4 in the standings. "Last week we had been losing the close games by a base hit and now we are getting that base hit that earns us the game," said head coach Rocco Mossuto. "You can definitely see the makings of a good season now, as we continue on getting those timely hits as well as working on pitching and defence." In their home game on June 10, the Beavers claimed a 4-1 win over the Melville Millionaires. Pitcher Anthony Davey started on the mound, pitching seven innings and only allowing one run scored in the third by the Millionaires. Relief pitchers Styon Barfield and Derek Mayer kept up the effort start by Davey, keeping the Millionaires to one run throughout the last two innings. The Beavers gained the lead in the fourth inning on a three-run advantage. A homer by Willie Mays brought in three runs, bringing in himself, Cody Pride and Clint Massey. The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the eighth, when Massey doubled to second and stole third, then scored unearned. "It felt good to hit that home run," said Mays. "I had been kind of struggling at the plate, so I had been working on going up the middle. It was a big win for our team too, it really showed that we have come together as a team off and on the field." Heading to bat against Saskatoon at Tom Laing Park on June 14 and 15, the Beavers saw very tight games against the Yellow Jackets. They took a one-run lead by the bottom of the second in the Saturday night game, as Massey was scored on a single by Riley Gavello. Pitcher Chris Mills kept the mound strong for five innings, then suffered three runs lost to the Yellow Jackets in the top of the sixth. The Beavers were kept scoreless, despite leaving men on base through the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. On mound, Tyler Andreason came up as relief pitcher for one inning, with Styron Barfield finishing up on the mound for the last two innings. It was in the bottom of the ninth, with the score 3-1 still in Saskatoon's favor, that the Beavers were able to rally to a win. First at bat was Gavello, he was walked to first and then stole second. Jordan Basile followed at bat, and was also walked. Grant Fillipitch came up and flied out to right field, with Gavello advancing to third and Basile remaining on first. After seeing Cody Pride strike out, Clint Massey came up with two men on base and two men out. He homered it out of the park, earning three runs and winning the game for the Beavers. "It was an amazing feeling to get that home run, especially since we were working hard and were about to lose another one. I just had to bring it home for the team," said Massey. "We had a poor start to the season as we had to feel each other out in playing abilities, but we were able to pull it together and now we have great chemistry." Returning to the Tom Laing diamond on Sunday to face the Yellow Jackets again, the Beavers forced a tied game into extra innings before securing a win. With a no-hit score on both sides for seven innings, pitcher Gord Gatemen stayed strong on the mound. Gatemen finished up on the mound in the eighth inning, permitting one run scored. The Beavers quickly tied the score 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, when errors by Saskatoon played in the Beavers' favour, allowing Mat Larson to reach first. Curtis Ford came in to pitch run for Larson, he was advanced to second on a single by Jarod Wagoner, then scored at home when an error by the pitcher allowed KC McCormick onto first and Ford into home. Derek Mayer went to the mound in the ninth inning and pitched for two extra innings, keeping the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets from scoring. In both the ninth and the tenth innings, the Beavers were unable to get any men on base. Then in the 11th inning, Basile singled to get on base, advancing to third by a single by Fillipitch. A single by Pride brought in the winning run by Basile, ending the game. "Our first week had been a little sketchy, but we are now looking pretty good and have been getting our hits at bat," said Gavello. "It feels great to get the wins, everyone on the team is supportive of each other. The main difference is attitude; every one of us wants to win." The Beavers had a rained-out game on June 11, they were supposed to face the Yorkton Cardinals at home. In the next week they will be on an away stretch, playing in Melville on June 17, in Swift Current on June 19 and in Moose Jaw on June 22. Their next home games will be Tuesday, June 24 and Wednesday, June 25, when they face the Lethbridge Bulls. Both games start at 7 p.m. at Tom Laing Park. |
