The Weyburn 4-H Beef Club is getting ready to wind up the year with the Achievement Day and regional show just around the corner. There were many highlights of the past year, including the Regina Spring Steer and Heifer show which was held March 15-18. Robert Pineo placed first in his steer weight class, and won first in the intermediate showmanship. Brodie Gutzke also won first in his steer weight class and was the overall reserve champion with his steer. The Yorkton Spring Steer and Heifer Show was held March 27-29. Highlights from the Jackpot Steer show were Robert Pineo coming out of his class as the overall Reserve Champion. In the open steer show, Nevin Gordon won second in his class, Pineo won first in his class and Ryley Gutzke won third in his class. Robert and Nevin went on to compete in the championship class. The intermediate grooming team did a great job winning first place. The team included Robert Pineo, Ryley Gutzke and Tyson Gutzke. Both of these shows were highly competitive with members from all over Saskatchewan and as far as Manitoba. The 4-H speeches were all wrapped up at the provincial level on April 26 in Watrous, where 32 of the best 4-H public speakers were there to compete. Logan Lazurko from Weyburn competed at the intermediate level with his speech entitled, "Fish". Logan won his way from club level all the way to provincial level. On May 10, the Show Calf Cruze (steer and heifer show) was held in Weyburn. Showing from the Weyburn club were Jacey and Daniel Fellner, Nevin Gordon, Robert and Christine Pineo, Hana Fish, and Brodie, Ryley and Tyson Gutzke. Highlights included Brodie Gutzke and Robert Pineo winning their steer class, Tyson placing second in his steer class and Nevin winning third in his steer class. Brodie, Robert and Tyson were in the championship steer class. Jacey Fellner placed third in showmanship and Daniel Fellner placed fourth in showmanship. Overall results were Justin Hall of Craven, grand champion heifer; Courtney Bill of Estevan, reserve champion heifer; Kayla King of Stoughton, grand champion steer; and Brodie Gutzke of Weyburn, reserve champion steer. On May 24, the Weyburn club toured the B&D Meats shop. The members learned about the different cuts of meat and how each is cut. There was information on marbling, grading and packaging meat, and were given samples and beef jerky. The Weyburn club, along with many other clubs from the southeast area, went on a Field Day tour of Border Line Feeders on June 7 at Ceylon. All in attendance were given an informative tour and demonstration. They learned such things as how to grade beef, marbling, implants, the difference between good and bad organs, feed ratios, rate of gain and many more topics. At the end of the day, the 4-H members and their parents and leaders were treated to a barbecue, with door prizes given out. Achievement Day is soon approaching, and will have all the members finishing up record books, grooming, and clipping up their steers, heifers and cow-calf pairs. The 4-H Achievement day will be held on Saturday, June 28, starting at 9 a.m. at the Ag Society barn, and is open to the general public with no admission charge. The regional team grooming, judging and showmanship competition will be on Monday, June 30. The Regional Steer Show will be held on July 1 during the Weyburn Fair. The Regional Female show will be held at the Fair on July 2, and the 4-H Fed Calf sale will be on the afternoon of July 2. Come out and watch and support these 4-H members. They have worked hard all year and are ready to show their final projects. |
