Face Lethbridge at Tom Laing tonight

Senior Beavers seeking to rebound after losing three

By SABRINA KRAFT of the Weyburn Review

After suffering three losses in a row, the Weyburn Senior Beavers are looking to earn some wins in the next week, improving their standings from 4-7 in the league, especially in their upcoming home games against Lethbridge.

"We have been playing hard, with tight games throughout the first couple weeks. It is still early in the season and we have a lot to play, with a good team that can take more wins," said head coach Rocco Mossuto.

Playing in Melville on June 17, the Beavers lost 4-2 to the Millionaires. The game started with neither side being able to score runs through the first three innings. Pitcher Ricky Carlson was on the mound during those six innings, with Melville earning two runs off Carlson in the bottom of the fourth and one run in the bottom of the sixth.

Styron Barfield came in as relief on the mound at the bottom of the seventh; he pitched into the eighth inning and had one run scored off him, then Tyler Andreason finished up. The Beavers were scoreless until the bottom of the ninth, when a homer by Willie Mays scored two runs, himself and Clint Massey. Matti Emery was on third, KC McCormick on second and Riley Gavello on first to load the bases with two men out, giving the Beavers a hope to take the win. After James House struck out, it brought an end to the game.

"The Melville team had a strong lead off us, with their batters coming alive at the plate," said Carlson. "But we were able to come back with scoring our own runs and finished on a strong point."

"Our hitters and pitchers have continued to improve through the first weeks," said Carlson. "We will be seeing more wins, as we make those improvements to climb back up the standings."

The Beavers then traveled to Swift Current on June 19, where they suffered a 8-0 loss to the Indians. At bat, the Beavers were only able to muster five hits in the game, but were unable to score any runs.

The big scoring innings for the Indians were full of errors for the Beavers, with six in total earned throughout the game. Pitcher Anthony Davey started the game, he pitched for seven innings and four runs were earned off five hits and two errors. In the bottom of the eighth, Tyler Andreason took over pitching, and gave up four runs on four hits and four errors.

Then on Friday evening, the Beavers took a 6-2 loss against the Yorkton Cardinals at Tom Laing Park in Weyburn. In the early innings, the Beavers claimed a lead over the Cardinals, as Massey was scored in the third inning by a sacrifice fly by Mays and then in the fourth, Massey hit a double to earn runs by Jordan Basile and Jared Wagoner.

Pitching on the mound for the first five innings was Chris Mills, and he kept the Cardinals scoreless for four innings, giving up two runs in the fifth inning. With the score 3-2, Barfield came to the mound as relief pitcher; he kept the Cardinals scoreless for one inning, then one run was scored in the seventh to tie the game. Derek Mayer finished up on the mound, keeping the score tied in the eighth inning, but he saw three runs scored by the Cardinals in the ninth.

The Beavers in the meanwhile were able to get men on base, but were unable to score any runs off the Cardinals.

"We were playing pretty smooth, until we reached the fifth inning and struggled slightly with our offensive strategy," said Mills. "Overall we have been playing pretty good baseball, we just have to get our wins back and reclaim our position in the league."

Rain canceled a game against the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Sunday night. The Beavers played Lethbridge on June 24, with game information unavailable due to publishing deadlines.

There is a home game tonight, Wednesday, June 25, as the Beavers face Lethbridge again at Tom Laing Park, with the first pitch at 7 p.m. The Beavers will play in Yorkton on June 26, then will come back home on Friday, June 27, when they face off against the Melville Millionaires at Tom Laing Park at 7 p.m.
