Curling club holding line on finances, members down

The Weyburn Curling Club is holding its own financially, but there were declines in membership numbers and in one of their biggest fundraisers of the year, the cash calendar, it was reported at their annual meeting held on June 24.

As Fred Martyn stepped down as club president, Charles Ries was nominated as the new president for the coming year. Other board members include Harry Plemel, Scott Paxman, Fred Milleker, Chris Mass and Scott Moffat, with Glenn Tollefson as the club manager.

In presenting the financial report for the year-end, accountant Glenn Ziegler noted the annual dues for memberships was down by about 4.7 per cent from last year, and suggested the Curling Club may want to address this as it had an effect on the financial report.

The club reported a net loss on the year of $20,677, but Ziegler noted that due to the way the books are done, there is not a cash loss to the club as depreciation accounts for a good part of the deficit.

The net effect is the members' equity in the club was reduced from $374,740 down to $354,063. Expenditures on the year rose slightly to $183,391, while revenues totalled $113,606, along with $23,118 from projects, and $26,812 from the lounge.

The revenues from the monthly cash calendar declined significantly, offset this year by the Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show. The curling club's share of the rebate from the calendars will be $1,541. The feeling was expressed that there wasn't enough push in the right direction for this fundraiser.

"It's an excellent program, a good fundraiser, but we have a hell of a time getting support," commented Brian Bakken, who also sits on the golf course board; the fundraiser is shared between the golf course and curling club.

For the coming year, the Weyburn Curling Club will host the provincial mixed championships next year.
