Head into Alberta for road games

Senior Beavers lose four, win one against Yorkton

By SABRINA KRAFT of the Weyburn Review

In the last week the Beavers lost four games, with one win against Yorkton breaking a losing streak for the team. They sit last in the standings in the east division, six games behind the leader. There will be no home games this week, as the Beavers travel to Alberta to take on the Okotoks Dawgs and the Sherwood Park Dukes.

Taking on Lethbridge on June 24 at Tom Laing Park, the Beavers fought a tight game and saw the Bulls walk away with a 10-8 win. It was back and forth for both teams, with each trying to take an edge over the other.

The Bulls started with a one-run lead in the first inning, with the Beavers responding in the second inning with earning three runs. Brendan Messer doubled to bring in runs by Willie Mays and Jared Wagoner, then he succeeded in stealing home to score a third run. Then as the Bulls scored two runs in the third to tie the game, they took a slight lead with one more run in the fourth. Taking back the lead, the Beavers scored two runs in two innings. In the fifth, Riley Gavello came home on a sacrifice fly by Grant Fillipitch, and in the sixth, Wagoner scored unearned after advancing to third, then was pushed home when Jordan Basile walked, with the bases loaded.

With the Beavers leading 5-4, the Bulls hit hard in the seventh inning and scored four runs off the Beaver defence. Determined to come back, the Beavers scored three runs in the eighth to tie the game. Casey Massey grounded out to allow Messer to score, then Fillipitch singled to right field to allow runs scored by Basile and an unearned run by Riley Gavello.

Pitcher Gord Gateman started on the mound, he pitched steady for seven innings, with eight runs scored, with eight hits and five errors. Relieving Gateman was Brennan Luffman, who pitched the last two innings and had two runs scored off him. With a two-run lead, the Bulls took the win after the Beavers left two men on base in the bottom of the ninth.

"This was a really close game for us, it was just unfortunate that we were unable to take the win," said Fillipitch. "It was just nice that I was able to produce a couple of hits and have been able to help out the team."

Returning to bat with Lethbridge on June 25, the Beavers struggled to maintain a strong offence and fell 11-5 to the Bulls. The first two innings was tight, as the Bulls started the game with three runs in the first inning, with the Beavers responding with two runs in the first and one run in the second to tie the game. After two men out in the first, Fillipitch singled to score in Curtis Ford, then was able to come home himself when Cody Pride singled into center field. Then in the second, after getting on base from a walk, Wagoner stole second, then advanced to third and into home on two wild pitches.

The Bulls broke the tie in the third inning, securing three runs to gain the lead. The Bulls were kept from taking any more runs in the fourth and fifth, with the Beavers earning one run in the fourth when a sacrifice fly by Gavello brought in a run by Wagoner. At the end of the fifth inning, starting pitcher Ricky Carlson stepped down from the mound, with Styron Barfield coming in as relief.

Barfield suffered with the Bulls earning five runs off him in the sixth. Tyler Andreason was then sent to the mound for two innings and Wagoner finished off the last inning, with both pitchers keeping the Bulls from scoring any more runs. At the bat, the Beavers were also kept scoreless, until the bottom of the ninth with a run by Ford was scored was forced by a walk and the bases full.

"We competed very hard against Yorkton and Lethbridge, but the end result was obviously not what we wanted," said Pride. "It was not from lack of effort, as all three games were hard-fought games."

Traveling to Yorkton on June 26, the Cardinals kept the Beavers from scoring runs through the whole game with only five hits being earned by the defense, to take a win 4-0. Pitcher Anthony Davey was on the mound for seven innings, he gave up one run in the third, one in the fourth and one in the sixth. Fillipitch finished as relief pitcher, seeing one run scored in the bottom of the eighth.

The Beavers returned to Yorkton on June 30, taking a 3-1 win against the Cardinals. Pitcher Gateman pitched a strong game for eight innings, allowing the only one Yorkton run in the sixth inning. He was relieved on the mound by Derek Mayer.

The first four innings had been kept scoreless for both teams, then in the fifth the Beavers took a two-run lead off the Cardinals when Gavello singled into left field to score runs from Basile and Pride. Even with seeing one run stolen from Yorkton in the sixth, the Beavers kept their lead when in the seventh Gavello tripled to right field, securing a run by James House.

Playing Canada Day in Regina, the Beavers played a close game with the Red Sox taking a 5-3 win. Both teams came out hitting hard in the first inning, with a run scored by Gavello off a single by Basile for the Beavers. Regina responded by taking two runs in the first inning, taking a one-run lead.

The score remained at a one-run difference until the top of the sixth, when Basile singled down the left field line to allow House to score one run. Shortly after, Pride singled to left field to secure a run by Basile. Now with one run in the Beaver's favor, they kept the Regina team on the defense for one inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Regina responded by earning three runs to reclaim their lead. Pitcher Chris Mills was one the mound for two of these runs, then was relieved by Tyler Andreason, who had one run earned off him. Styron Barfield finished up on the plate strong, keeping Regina from gaining any more runs.

This Friday and Saturday, Weyburn will be Okotoks. Then on Sunday and Monday they travel to Sherwood Park. In facing these tough Alberta teams, the players seem talked about what strategy they will be taking. "Our pitching all year has been solid, but we will need to work on getting quick runs to take the lead and let our pitchers hold off their batters," said Fillipitch. "We have been making strong efforts late in the game, but it hasn't been enough."

"We will have to go out there with the approach that we need to score runs, because without runs we cannot win ball games," said Pride. "We will be working on those key hits to win the game, with our pitchers continuing to keep the batters from scoring at the mound."
