The Weyburn Youngfellows Midget B girls fast-pitch softball team finished third at the provincial playoffs held in Regina over the July 4-6 weekend. In the round-robin portion of the tournament, the Youngfellows defeated Craik, Saskatoon White Lightning and Prince Albert, and lost only to the Battlefords by a score of 6-3 in extra innings. With a three-win one-loss record, the girls finished second in their pool, and advanced to Sunday's championship round. In their first game of the championship round, Weyburn defeated the Saskatoon Red Selects by a score of 9-1. The score was tied at one run each until the fifth inning when the Youngfellows rallied for five runs. Weyburn added two more runs in the sixth and the game was ended. In their second game Sunday, the semi-final match, the Youngfellows bats went silent and they lost a heart-breaker 2-1 to the South-East Angels from Carlyle. For Weyburn Minor Ball, the loss ended a four-year streak of provincial Midget B championships, and a five-year streak of trips to the Western Canadian Championships for Weyburn Midget girls teams. For the current Weyburn Youngfellows, the provincial playoffs were the first time this year the entire team was together. Prior to the weekend, due to injuries, school and work commitments and graduation, the 12 players and three coaches had never been together as a complete unit. Apart from a couple of tournaments they attended, the 2008 Weyburn Midget Youngfellows have been competing in the Regina Ladies Softball League. Presently they are 10th in league standings amongst the 14 teams in the league. The Youngfellows will wrap up their regular league schedule this week with the hopes of making it into the league playoffs. All games for the Regina Ladies Softball League have been played at Regina's Douglas Park this season. |
