Library opens new graphic novel section

The Weyburn Public Library has opened a new Graphic Novels section, located on the shelves to the right of the main entrance.

The section is beside a recently opened section featuring new hardcover bestsellers, which offers bestsellers on a first-come first-served basis.

The new Graphic Novels section is an attempt by the library to attract and retain teenaged patrons, an important demographic.

The graphic novels of today are the comic books of a new generation, with the main difference being changes in technology and cultural influences, particularly from Japan.

Public libraries throughout North America are finding that this format is extremely popular with young people.

Generally there are two types of Japanese graphic novels: manga, and anime. Manga are Japanese cartoons, while anime is Japanese animation.

Manga have characters with huge hair and huge eyes generally, while anime characters are in colour and appear more realistic.
