Some Weyburn area residents will be staging a Rendezvous, a historical re-enactment of the fur traders' era, at a camp located south of Weyburn over the long weekend. Mark and Chris Thorn, along with Don Rose of Yellow Grass, will be hosting the event, and hope to have fellow enthusiasts coming in from Regina, Yorkton, Williston and Minot, N.D. Mark Thorn held a small Rendezvous event last year, and hopes this year's event will be bigger. "A Rendezvous is a re-enactment of the fur trade era. The tents are all old-fashioned-style canvas tents, and people wear clothing from the 1800s. They also shoot black powder rifles, and muzzleloaders. It's mostly a social gathering," said Thorn, adding he has no guarantee of how many participants he will actually have attending. He noted this sort of re-enactment is much bigger in the United States, where it's referred to as "buckskinning", and also has more people involved in it in B.C. and Manitoba. The land location for the camp is, from Weyburn, south on Highway 35 to the Grassdale Road, or the turnoff at Demby Trailers; go eight miles west, then a mile and a quarter north and a half mile west. Most of the participants will arrive on Thursday evening, so Thorn expects Friday and Saturday to be the best days if any member of the public wants to come down and see the campsite. The participants will be bringing their own food, including having an elk roast in a Dutch oven over the fire. |
