The Turner Curling Museum

Curling is a way of life for Don & Elva Turner, so it was not surprising when they turned their basement into a year-round curling museum.

Besides being avid curling collectors, the Turners are well known in the Saskatchewan curling community. Don served as a key organizer in both the 1973 and 1983 Regina Silver Broom committees and is a Past President of the Weyburn Curling Club. They have been regulars at the Silver Broom, where he's traded pins with collectors from around the world.

The Turner collection features many rare, historical curling pieces, including one of the largest collections of curling pins in the country. There may be some rivalry across the land as to whom has the largest collection of pins (Turner has over 18,000), but there's little argument that Don and Elva have the largest collection of curling memorabilia of anyone in the world.

Among their collection is a rare set of circular curling irons with iron handles, used in the Ottawa Valley, circa 1800. The largest item is a rock sharpener used by the Queen City Curling Stone Co. of Regina from the 1930's to the 1950's. In addition to their pins and artifacts of curling, the Turners also have a collection of books from the Saskatchewan Curling Association as well as stacks of programs from the various competitions throughout Canada and the world.

The Turners'collection outgrew their basement years ago and they were looking for a permanent home for the proper display of their collection. The City of Weyburn agreed to give the Turner collection a permanent home. This is located in a 2660 sq. ft. building attached to the new indoor leisure centre. The museum has its own entrance and climate control system. The new facility opened in November of 1990.
