The RBC Cup, Canada's national junior A hockey championships, kicked off in Humboldt on May 4 with opening ceremonies. All five teams playing in the championships — the Humboldt Broncos, Penticton Vees, Woodstock Slammers, Portage Terriers and the Soo Thunderbirds — were brought on to the ice. Action started on the ice the next day. The Humboldt Broncos took on the Woodstock Slammers in their first game of the Cup on Saturday night, and won 4-1. They then played the Penticton Vees on Sunday, and won 3-2 in overtime. In their third game, the Broncos played the Soo Thunderbirds, and won 3-0, giving them a tournament-leading 3-0 record.
