A collision at Humboldt’s busiest intersection  left a truck on its roof, and sent a car careening through Civic Park on Sunday afternoon.
At approximately 4 p.m. on July 29, Humboldt RCMP, ambulance and fire crews were called to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Hwys. 5 and 20 in Humboldt — also known as Main St. and 8th Ave.
“A pickup truck was travelling west on 8th Ave. through the intersection when a southbound car on Main St. struck the passenger side of the pickup,” stated Const. Trevor Scott of the Humboldt RCMP.
The force of the collision caused the truck, driven by a 29-year-old man from Humboldt, to roll onto its roof. The car, driven by a 16-year-old female, also from Humboldt, entered Civic Park, located on the southwest corner of the intersection, and was able to manoeuvre through the trees before coming to a stop across the back alley, near a large condominium complex.
In addition to the 29-year-old driver, there were two small children who were passengers in the truck, and an adult male, and a youth were passengers in the car driven by the 16-year-old.
Though the Humboldt Fire Department was called to the scene, its members were not required to perform any extrications.
They had all been wearing seatbelts, and were able to get themselves out of their vehicles by the time firefighters arrived at the scene, reported Fire Chief Norbert LeBlanc.
All drivers and passengers were treated for their injuries at the scene by Humboldt and District Ambulance Service, and subsequently released. “The section of 8th Ave. between Main Street and 9th St. was closed temporarily to facilitate with the investigation and safety of emergency workers,” said Scott.
Members of the Humboldt Fire Department assisted in directing traffic, LeBlanc said.
The scene was cleaned up by 4:45 p.m.
According to Scott, the driver of the car was a learner with a Class 7 driver’s permit and it appears she was pressing the accelerator when she thought she was pressing the brake.
An experienced  driver with a full Class 5 licence was in the front seat supervising, Scott added.
“It was an unfortunate incident of driver error,” he stated.
The RCMP will not be laying any charges as a result of this collision.
