The Weyburn Comp School has taken over the Relay for Life fundraiser for Weyburn this year.
A special event to raise awareness and funds for the Canadian Cancer Society will be held Saturday, May 24 at the Comp, called “Friends of Relay”.

“Friends of Relay” is the same as the Relay for Life events that were held in the community in the past, except that this year the hours will be from noon to midnight. All funds raised go to the Canadian Cancer Society.

The event is being chaired by the Weyburn Comp Student Representative Council and is open to the entire community.

“We would like to encourage people to put in a team,” said Joanne Jensen, guidance counsellor and student services representative at the Comp.

Residents who want to register a team, and start fundraising, can pick up a registration packages at Superior Office, Pharmasave, Weyburn Leisure Centre and the Weyburn Comp.
“We are hoping the entire community will support the event and come to Comp on May 24,” said Jensen. The event will be held on the track and around the soccer field. Opening ceremonies will begin at noon, with the Survivor Lap to follow.

Survivors of cancer are encouraged to contact Joanne Jensen. The luminary ceremony will be at 10 p.m., and the closing ceremonies will be at 11:45 p.m., with “Friends of Relay” finishing at midnight.

Entertainment will be on the stage throughout the entire day. The WCS students (including STARS Choir and their full choir) will be providing the majority of the entertainment. This includes many talented individuals and student bands.

“We are also excited to have Tenille Arts perform,” said Jensen. A list of performers and a schedule will be publicized in the next couple weeks.

Activities for the Relay teams will include a carnival, face painting, and displays. Food will be available for purchase throughout the day. There will be a silent auction and a raffle with items donated by local supporters.

Volunteers are needed, and anyone interested can contact the Weyburn Comp School or Caroline Gillies. For more information, residents can contact Joanne Jensen or Vanessa Flavel at the Weyburn Comp.

The goal of the Weyburn Comp SRC is to make “Friends of Relay” an annual event.
