TOKYO - Canadian figure skater Mervin Tran is considering changing his nationality in order to compete for Japan at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
International Skating Union rules allowed Tran to compete for Japan with partner Narumi Takahashi at the world championships last month, where they took bronze in the pairs competition in Nice, France. But he needs full citizenship to compete for Japan at the Olympics.
Tran said on Twitter that "I will continue to think critically about my decision as I would very much like to go."
Japanese Olympic Committee president Tsunekazu Takeda said Thursday the JOC "was willing to make a special request (on behalf of Tran) to the government if necessary."
The 21-year-old Tran was also a member of the Japanese team that won the International Skating Union's World Team Trophy in Tokyo on Saturday.
