Crews continue to battle fire at 5 Wing Goose Bay military base in Labrador

HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L. - A fire was still burning near the 5 Wing Goose Bay military airbase in Labrador on Saturday.

Maj. Paul Doucette, spokesman for the Joint Task Force Atlantic, said the fire that broke out around noon on Friday was still not under control on Saturday around 6:30 p.m. local time.

Doucette said high winds were making it difficult to battle the blaze, located just north of the base.

The RCMP said there was no threat to the town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Doucette said two Natural Resources helicopters were continuing to douse water onto the fire, while several other military and civilian helicopters were assessing the area.
